What Does Recyclable Mean for Coffee Bags?

A recyclable coffee bag can be processed by the standard recycling system — but with an important caveat. Most flexible plastic packaging, including coffee bags, is currently not accepted in Australian kerbside recycling bins. Recyclable coffee bags need to be returned to a designated soft plastics drop-off point (such as REDcycle collection points where available) to enter the recycling stream.

What this means in practice:

• Your customer needs to actively return the bag to a collection point
• If they place it in their home recycling bin, it's likely to be rejected and sent to landfill
• Clear consumer education is essential — the bag should include disposal instructions

The upside:

• Recyclable bags maintain excellent barrier properties — your coffee stays fresh
• The cost difference compared to conventional bags is relatively small
• As soft plastic recycling infrastructure improves — and it will need to become more widely compostable — recyclable bags are aligned with this direction
• The quality of the recycling outcome depends on consumer behaviour and local infrastructure

What Does Compostable Mean for Coffee Bags?

Compostable packaging is designed to break down into organic matter under specific composting conditions. There are two types:

Home compostable:

Breaks down in a standard home compost bin. This is the gold standard — no specialist infrastructure required. Look for the Australian Standard AS 5810 certification.

Industrially compostable:

Requires access to a commercial composting facility that reaches the temperatures needed for breakdown. If your customer doesn't have access to industrial composting, an industrially compostable bag that ends up in landfill doesn't break down — it behaves like conventional plastic.

The trade-off with compostable bags:

• Generally higher cost than conventional or recyclable options
• Barrier properties (which protect coffee freshness) can be lower than conventional film
• Home compostable bags with adequate barrier performance are technically challenging to produce — options exist but at a price premium
