What's happening with products delays right now?

A look forward to the future – 2022

With forward planning proving a necessity during 2021 the team at Coffee Bags Direct wanted to ensure our preparation for 2022 followed suit. Whilst little is being mentioned in the media about changes in the global shipping situation, we believe there are some important insights businesses should be aware of in their preparation for 2022. We anticipate current global shipping conditions will continue for at least the next six to twelve months.

Ship outbreaks – we’ve recently heard of a number of COVID outbreaks onboard ships, resulting in diversion and entire ship deep cleaned. The full crew is then replaced entire ship resulting in approximate delays of three (3) weeks incurred.

Container shortages – current and ongoing. With one-way traffic and global ports continuing to work through backlogs, container shortages are still a reality. Add to this the quarantining of ships prior to port entrance and you’ve got a very slow recapture rate. The result is high demand for containers and all-time high rates.

      China

o Manufacturing Impacts – the country is currently working through a COVID outbreak which is estimated to continue through to January, the country is also dealing with heavy restrictions to electricity consumption. Strict control over population movements and reduced operational hours are resulting in extended production time-frames.

o Chinese New Year 2022 and the Beijing Winter Olympics – February 2022.

      Chinese New Year (1st February 2022 – 15th February 2022)

With the alignment of these events, there will be strict control of population movements as the country pushes to be COVID free prior to and throughout. Combine these factors and the traditional pre-Chinese New Year rush will be frantic. We recommend to our clients that any production runs be completed by the middle of January at the latest to ensure goods can be consolidated and shipped out in good time to avoid the congestion and risk of non-departure.

Although COVID related port shutdowns, delays and container shortages have been a staple throughout 2021, we can help you avoid the full effects being felt. We would ask all our customers to ensure they are pre-empting delays in this busy period and recommend clients act at least one (1) month ahead of schedule.
